1785-1850. German economist and geographer,
who believed that the success of a state
depends on the well-being of its farmers. His
book The Isolated State 1820, a pioneering
study of land use, includes the earliest
example of marginal productivity theory, a
theory which he developed to calculate the
natural wage for a farmworker. He has been
described as the first modern economist.
